REVIEW

The Chicago Fire is a hot soccer team, but the real heat in this book is between Levi and Vista.

If a parent tries take away a child’s candy, the child is more than likely going want to have it even more.  That was certainly the case for Levi.  His father insisted that he not date Vista.  He can fight the thoughts of her during the day, but is plagued with dreams of being with her at night.

Vista can work as much as she wants but there’s no way to get Levi out of her head when, “He looks rough.  Dirty.  Mountable.”

The sexual tension between Levi and Vista is palpable.  I almost hesitate to use that word only because it is often over used in romance reviews.  However, the mounting connection between them is practically tangible.

After getting caught succumbing to their attraction, they are ripped apart again.  But even after being reunited again, they end up being separated yet another time.  Their relationship is a bit of a roller coaster.  Considering their young age, it seems more believable than overly dramatic.

My absolutely favorite part was Levi’s proclamation of love on the Jimmy Kimmel show.

“You were right, princess.  It’s you and me.  So don’t lock that door just yet.  Make sure you leave a light on.”

BLURB

Levi Black is an s.o.b.Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he’s a pretentious, obnoxious, womanizing jacka** who thinks the world revolves around him.

He wouldn’t be wrong.

A famous soccer player, his skills on and off the field have won him medals, trophies, women, and the cover of every heartthrob magazine in the country. He’s broken nearly every bone in his body and a few hearts along the way, including mine—his stepsister—and lived to tell about it.

One night changed everything, and I’ve avoided him like the plague ever since. Just long enough to finish college, to bury the hurt, and to outrun the memories. But now that’s all changed. I’m back, and there’s no more running.

My hands are supposed to be my livelihood, but now they’re my curse. Levi’s reckless ways have landed him in a sticky situation, and his father has given me an offer I can’t refuse. One month, and all I have to do is put my hands on his body. Easier said than done. The problem is, even though I know it’s bound to bite me in the a**, I can’t bring myself to say no to the s.o.b.

J.B. Havens & Samantha A. Cole – No Way In Hell (Part One & Two)

32479109.jpg32587959.jpg

Review

I’m a huge fan of the Trident Security novels by Samantha A. Cole. I’ve read and loved the entire series. I have never read J.B. Havens’ Steel Corps series. I make note of this because I think it is important to be upfront about how I go into reviewing a book.

First item you must know: these two books must be read together. It really is just one continuous story.

Second, these books are much more military based than romance (like the Trident Security). There is only a dab of romance.

Part I

This was a serious deviation from Samantha Cole’s Trident Security.  The story line was mostly military. The military scenes were full of intensity and graphic details. It was a little too gory for my taste. I missed the BDSM club from Trident. There are a few quick vanilla romps and a mere reference to Carter playing at BDSM club. I had a great appreciation for the heat in the Trident Series. I missed it in this book. This is also a multi-perspective book told in both first and third person. This combination is not typical, but I didn’t mind it. I’ve always been a fan of Carter. I liked getting to know Mic. She’s small but mighty.

Part II

This book was a bit more playful as Carter and Mic go undercover together. I prefer books that are fun and flirty. The military and suspense aspects were much more appealing in Part II. The scenes were extremely well thought out and had a lot of detail. The difference was the military parts were more intellectual than gruesome.

LOVED THE ENDING!

No Way in Hell is a novel separated into 2 novellas. Reading Book 1 is necessary for Book 2.

Steel Corps—an elite, covert U.S. military team led by Staff Sergeant Bea ‘Mic’ Michaels, based out of a secure location in Pennsylvania.

Trident Security—a private security agency located in Tampa, Florida, comprised of retired Navy SEALs.

T. Carter—U.S. spy and assassin.

What do they have in common? They all do Uncle Sam’s dirty work.

How did they get started and how did their paths cross? Find out as they prepare to join forces to take down a domestic terrorist organization with one goal in mind—to destroy what these men and one woman will fight to the death to protect—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

No Way in Hell is a two-part crossover novel uniting J.B. Haven’s Steel Corps Series and Samantha A. Cole’s Trident Security Series. While reading both series is not necessary prior to reading No Way in Hell, it is recommended for optimum enjoyment

REVIEW

Review of Story: I truly enjoyed the story. The story unfolded sweetly like a blooming rose. It was sweet like the scent of rose. It had some intensely difficult part to read like the thorns on a rose bush. I love the baseball backdrop for what amounts to a clean romance with the theme of conquering one’s past, with an added splash of the trials and tribulations of dealing with those with alzheimers’s . Roberta’s past was well constructed. Unlike most history of domestic abuse characters this character included a bit how she dealt with the issue before meeting the love of her life. I liked that there wasn’t anything simple about this character. Luke’s character was a bit more straight forward. I liked the realism that he was a minor league baseball player and not the tallest of the lot. His heart made him a very lovable character.

Review of Audio: Gary Furlong did a nice job of narrating Luke’s character. His voice and delivery seemed to compliment Luke’s easy going character and warm nature. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for Aundrea Mitchell’s audio part for Roberta. The cadence of her voice made it agonizing to listen to her speak. She literally pauses after every grouping of 3 to 4 words. The repetition made it tiring to listen to her chapters.

I always finish every book that I agree to review. This book was difficult to finish because of Aundrea Mitchell’s poor audio part.

LOVED the BOOK; LOATHED the AUDIO

BLURB

Underdog Luke “Single” Singleton is yearning to make a comeback. After getting hit in the neck with a pitch—an injury that nearly cost him his life—he has one last chance to play for his hometown team, the Stockton Beavers. But his mom has Alzheimer’s, and he’s all she has to depend on. How can he pursue his career, much less someone special? Personal care aide Roberta Bennett is done dating baseball players. Having had her share of heartbreak, she heads to Stockton hoping for a fresh start. But after she finds Luke’s mom outside, lost, and alone, she can’t refuse when he hires her on the spot. Unbeknownst to Luke, Roberta is all too familiar with the violent tendencies of the pitcher who hit him. Now that they’re living under the same roof, the last thing either of them is looking for is a relationship. But it’s not long before they find themselves drawn to each other. And right when Luke is thinking about finally making a change to his single status, a secret from Roberta’s past emerges with the power to tear them apart.

About the Author
Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball’s biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette‘s impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven.

Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as manygames as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she’s not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right. REVIEW

This is a short book packed with a lot of heat. I’m not usually a fan of short books because I like to have time to get know a character for a while.  This books jumps right in and I couldn’t help but get attached to the characters quickly.

I like how this Rock Star is in his thirties. It makes the story feel more realistic, because he’s reached an age and maturity where he is tamable.

There was suspense element to this book that I wasn’t expecting. It ties in really well to the first book in this series. I love the continuity between the books in this series.

I’m eagerly looking forward to the next in the series.

Melissa Foster – Tempting Tristan

51JsLBwSksL._SX322_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

REVIEW

This is an amazingly sensational (worthy of repeating similar adjectives and adverbs) combination of perspiration inspiring hot romance and perhaps the most heartfelt gay romance I have ever read.  (And, yes – I’ve read a LOT).

The depth of the love between Tristan and Alex is unprecedented.  Their strength and desire to be everything for one another is tear jerkingly tender. They work hard to be what each other deserves.  As they work towards that goal, they win the hearts of readers.

The book is a dual perspective book, where the chapters alternated between Tristan and Alex.  I often found that I forgot who was narrating the chapter. It seemed like their souls meshed into one.

Tempting Tristan.png

BLURB

Tempting Tristan is a stand-alone M/M romance featuring two sexy, lovable alpha heroes.

TRISTAN AND ALEX

Fresh off the heels of yet another bad relationship, Tristan Brewer is taking a break from men to try to figure out where he keeps going wrong. He knows his biggest fault―he leads with his heart, not his head―and that’s never going to change. But after several introspective weeks, he’s beginning to get a handle on things. That is, until badass heartthrob Alex Wells walks into his bar…

Alex has spent eight years in the army, months in a hospital bed, and far too long hiding his sexual identity. He’s guilt-ridden, damaged, pissed off, and up for a Silver Star for the incident that nearly cost him his life―and kept him from his grandmother’s funeral. But all he wants to do is live the life he’s always dreamed of and forget his stint with the institution that allows but doesn’t necessarily accept.

The chemistry between Tristan and Alex ignites from the moment they meet, and the more time they spend together, the hotter the flames burn. But the closer they become, the more Alex’s walls go up, and when the two walk onto a military base, Tristan finds out Alex’s physical scars aren’t the ones that run the deepest.

Kelly Jamieson – Top Shelf (Aces Hockey, #3)

51atmQXvXpL-1.jpg

REVIEW

This is a sincerely thoughtful hockey romance story. It has all the critical elements of a hot hockey romance: sinfully sculpted male, spicy sex scenes, endearing love interest, and a fanatical drive to win games. In addition to all this, this book sets forth a theme about the importance of mental health.

I think this book sets a great message about the need for people to seek help for depression when they need it.  Life can send people some incredible difficult challenges that can put them in a temporary state of depression.  With a little help from professionals, depression can be addresses and conquered. I appreciated the fact that the book stresses that even if a person needs a little help at some point that it doesn’t undo their ability to become strong and independent.

I loved this book, in lieu of the fact that the author downplays the skills of my favorite NHL hockey team.  The heartfelt tension overpowered any irritation I had about choice of hockey teams.

Most of all, I LOVE the TITLE of this book!

This was the first book that I’ve read in Kelly Jamieson’s  Aces Hockey Series. I just added the rest of the books to my TBR.

BLURB

Whether it’s a clutch goal or a cocktail, nothing beats “top shelf.” In this novel from the bestselling author of the Heller Brothers Hockey series, a fun-loving jock and an ambitious career woman mix business with pleasure.

Not only is Jared Rupp one of the stars of the NHL’s Chicago Aces, he’s also the owner of the Sin Bin, the after-hours hot spot where the whole team hangs out. Lately, Jared can’t take his eyes off the woman he’s hired to give the Bin a more modern feel: a sexy, sophisticated consultant who has carved out a niche updating drink menus. She’s as passionate about her career as Jared is about hockey—and yet he can’t help wondering what kind of cocktail she really wants.

In her line of work, Sidney Frayne is used to guys hitting on her in bars, but Jared gets her hot enough to burst into flames. When he’s wining and dining her, he’s sophisticated as hell; on the rink, he’s a testosterone-fueled powerhouse. Still, Sidney’s bitter divorce taught her to keep her emotions on ice. With her busy schedule—and Jared’s playboy reputation—she’s not sure she’s ready for a fling. Because if she lets Jared into her bed, she just may have to let him into her heart.

REVIEW

If you read the first book in this series, you can understand how it was nearly impossible not to start reading this book. Fortunately, I had the pleasure of not having to wait between finishing book 1 and book 2.

Book 2 continues with a flare of originality. In the sea of many repetitive books, I give a lot of credence to the newness of the material. Also, the heat is turned up a bit higher in book 2.

Following a 10 month time lapse in the story between book 1 and book 2, the relationship between Lisa and Sir takes on a physical relationship.

Sir’s personality or needs (I’m not even quite sure what the proper reference word would be) is not very likable.  That is not intended to be a negative about the book. Hatred for a character makes for a good read sometimes. I admit to having hopes that Sir would eventually redeem himself. I’ll keep that opinion to myself. I will say that I do believe that Sir’s final moments seem to be out of character. I had a difficult time reconciling his final choices.

There is a large cast of characters in this book. I would have liked to have had the chance to know Annie a bit more.

BLURB

Lisa and Sir have finally managed to balance their kinky love life with the vanilla world of suburbia. But when Sir starts training a sexy young submissive, the strength of his relationship with Lisa is tested. Could polyamory be the key to maintaining the stability Lisa needs while giving Sir the variety he craves? This captivating sequel to Entropy is a provocative journey through the complex world of physical and virtual sexuality.

REVIEW

This book breaks the standard formula for a romance novel. First, the concept of an online romance is uniquely fantastic. To make things more interesting, it is a D/s relationship.  Coincidentally, I had just first heard of the concept of an online D/s relationship a few days before I started reading the book. I felt like I was reading an entirely new genre, which was new and exciting.

The ebb and flow of the developing relationship is less linear than most romance novels.  There are a number of issues that derail or set-back the progression of the relationship.

The depth of Lisa’s feelings grow incrementally throughout the book. The author never seems to make those unexpected leaps that ruins the believability of the book.

I fell in love with Lisa’s character when she starts tweeting from her hospital bed.  (Hey, it’s in the first 20% of the book, which I’ve decided doesn’t count as a real spoiler). Her humor and strength completely endeared me to her.

Sir always says, “Excuse me?” when Lisa says something disrespectful. When I finished the book I screamed, “Excuse me!” Beware of cliffhanger.

BLURB

Lisa is adrift—searching for connection on social media to compensate for the absence of love and attention in her marriage. But when a dominant married man entices her to become his online submissive, Lisa’s world starts to collapse around her. Could giving up all control be the secret to finding the serenity she longs to have? Cerebral and erotic, Entropy explores the murky depths of an online affair and how upheaval of the status quo reverberates through a woman’s life and sense of self.
