Grace Risata – My Dirty Detour

51F++7+BF1L._SX312_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This is a very unique story.  It’s like a combination of Alice in Wonderland and Pleasantville meets Mob Wives.  Here, Violet falls down a rabbit’s hole (gets lost on a deserted road); falls into a different era of mentality (she compares it to the 1950’s); and she finds herself face to face with reality stars from a mafia show that she watches.

Violet is an amazingly crazy and intriguing character.  Admittedly, she is an “enigma,” as Rocky points out, “You’re afraid of uncooked meat, but you can shoot an assault rifle?”  She’s an endless treat with all of her unfiltered comments.

Rocky believes himself to be a violent monster, but his heart, loyalty, and intelligence makes him extremely lovable.

The Italian, Russian, Ukranian, and Latino side characters are utterly fantastic: from the way they talk to the way they dress to the way they treat one another are utterly entertaining.

This story is filled with twist after twist.  There isn’t any predictability with the story, which makes it a great read.

J.C. Valentine – Forbidden Valentine

unnamed-3.jpg

This isn’t a hearts and roses Valentine book.  It’s shockingly humorous.  I was a bit embarrassed when I couldn’t control my laughter and cackled loudly.  Scene after scene is more amusing than the next.

Honestly, I’ve read a hundreds of romance books, but this one wins for most astonishing.  Even after a little research on the internet, I’m still astounded.

I won’t spoil the best lines, but I’m compelled to include this one from a side character:

“If men weren’t so gosh darned sexy with all those muscles and flirty smiles and round, apply bottoms and dicks, I’d go lesbo in a heartbeat.”

Don’t fret, there’s also enough sappy phrases to give the book a traditional romantic feel.

“You’re mine now, Dani.  You’re the only woman I’ve ever allowed in my home, in this bed, and after tonight, you’re the last one I want in here. … I may not be any good for you, but you’re damn well perfect for me.”

S. Valentine – His Confession

51sBw33OenL._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This is the ultimate romance reader’s dream.  Woman in a stifling-sexless relationship dives into a sex-driven, indulgence-filled relationship.

unnamed-2

This book has the heat of erotica and plot to keep the reader intrigued.  The sex is off the charts, but the struggle with trust is real.

There’s nothing sexier than the mutual ecstasy between Gabi and Darion.  “She loved the sounds of appreciation that he made, that he enjoyed every bit of it, as did she.”

Darion’s philosophy in life is “[W]e should stick to what gives us pleasure in life.  We only get one chance, ya know, why limit ourselves?”

unnamed-3

The one thing that bothered me about the story was all the smoking, which is why I reduced my rating from 5 stars to 4 stars.  It’s not that the smoking made me dislike the character.  There are many books where I hate the character (btw a great sign of writing) and have awarded a 5 star.  The smoking element, persistence, and timing added an “icky” factor that I simply couldn’t ignore.  Otherwise, the book is really great.  I look forward to reading the next one.

Tara Sue Me – The Master

51tvG+CqJ7L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This book is absolutely brilliant.  It literally takes a character from the evil depths of the BDSM world and steps through all the positive aspects of a BDSM relationship, which results in mentally strengthening both Dominant and submissive.

I love how the beauty and calmness of the cover directly reflects how the developing Dominant/submissive relationship between Cole and Sasha is soothing to both.  This story is about the delicacy of the BDSM relationship.

This book also contains a lot of hot erotic, traditional BDSM scenes.  Tara Sue Me writes with such finesse that the mental image of her words almost transforms into a physical caress.

THE-MASTER-TEASER-1

More importantly, the way that the author weaves the sex scenes into the context of a mutual beneficial relationship, makes this the best BDSM romance book I’ve read.

The author dispels the notion that the BDSM community is only comprised of depraved persons.  In the middle of a scene, involving numerous Doms and a sub, one of the participants receives an alarming call about their spouse being rushed to the hospital.  Everyone drops what they are doing to assist this person.  Just because these characters lead a kinky sexual lifestyle doesn’t make them lose sight of other priorities.

Finally, I also love the occasional nuggets of humor.  My favorite is when Cole sarcastically comments on Sasha’s lack of creative writing:

“Six years and the filthiest sentence you could come up with using ‘its’ is, ‘I put the vibrator in its place at the back of my nightstand’?”

Christina Lauren – Wicked Sexy Liar

51O8h-E7zEL._SX318_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This book was able to pull me out of a stressed-out funk and had me rolling on the floor laughing.

I loved the characters.

I loved the story.

I’m grateful to have had the chance to read something that made me feel this good.

London’s independence is fantastic.  When Luke wants to dive south she refuses.

“I can’t give my heart away all at once.  I want to.  But I can’t.”

The romantic aspects of the story are just as sensational as the humorous ones.  Even Luke, the player, can grow up and find a way to prove his love.  The difference between the steamy scenes at the beginning of the book and near the end are both great.  There’s a taste for hot and fun as compared to sultry and loving.

Grams is the best side character ever.  She embraces the quick-witted elderly person that is inappropriate and embarrassing.  She has no qualms about comparing asparagus to a penis at the dinner table.

And hey, it’s educational, too.  Did you know that

“Vagina roughly translates to sword holder in Latin.”

This may be my favorite in the series.

D.W. Marshall – Weeping Violet

51mV9wSIv8L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

If you read the first book in the series, Stolen Flame, then you need to read this book.  This novella is like an epilogue on steroids.  It is exactly what you wanted after the first book but would have been too long to include as an epilogue.

The beginning of this book rehashes a lot of the emotional trauma of the first book.  Rather than just being repetitious, it puts the reader into the mindset to appreciate Violet’s story.  It leaves you desperate for a happily ever after.

I worried that Brin wouldn’t figure out what she needed to heal herself.  I found it stressful that Brin could just as easily fall apart as she could reclaim herself.  When she finally figures it out what she needs, it is no guarantee that she’ll get it.

Camilla Isley – A Sudden Crush

unnamed.jpg

Review

Suddenly, Joanna and Connor are rescued from the island and suddenly I can’t put the book down.

After the rescue, the story is filled with unexpected turns, each more fantastic than the previous.  This isn’t a predictable Cinderella story, it is far more romantic and enticing.

Anyone that has ever had their heart broken, wants closures.  This book had me in tears (while I read it in public) when Joanna finally gets hers.

The book is also humorous, Katy says to Joanna just after seeing Connor in person,

“I thought you were a good writer, but you suck.  He doesn’t sound half as hot in your book.”

Blurb

Joanna Price is a city girl with the perfect life. She loves her job as a book editor, she just married Liam, high profile bestselling author and the man of her dreams, and she’s headed to the Caribbean to enjoy two weeks of paradise for her luxurious honeymoon.
Connor Duffield is a gruff, grumpy rancher from the Midwest. He is a country boy who has a no-nonsense approach to life, more scars than he’d like to admit, and he hates city girls.
So it’s just a misfortune they have to sit next to each other for a six hour plane ride. Even more so when their flight is caught in the perfect storm and Joanna wakes up stranded on a desert island with Connor, the very man she hoped she would never have to see again.

Why are they alone on this forsaken island? What happened to Joanna’s husband?

When her dream honeymoon turns into a hilarious tropical nightmare, Joanna’s first thought is survival. However, she and Connor will quickly discover just how boring paradise can be. As the days turn to weeks, and then months, this mismatched pair will have to learn how to coexist and how to resist the sparkles of an attraction they weren’t prepared to feel.

When they are finally rescued will Joanna’s marriage be saved as well, or will the life she knew and loved be in ruins?

Hi! I’m a writer of romantic comedy, cat’s lover, coffee addict, and shoes hoarder.  Besides writing, I love reading (surprise, surprise), cooking—and eating—especially pasta, going to the movies and obviously ordering a gigantic bowl of popcorn, and watching too much TV.
I understand that mosquitoes play a role in the ecosystem as a part of other animals’ diet, and I don’t want to starve all those frog princes out there, but I could really live without them.

Review

What a fun read.  I would compare this book to the movie Warm Bodies.  Take out the gross and dark aspects of Zombies and add a little humor and romance and presto – you’ve got a fun story.

I like that Alyssa, the main character and resident witch, can poke fun at the paranormal embodiments as she refers to the imps as “stupid creatures.”

Excerpt

Alyssa

I frowned down at my nettle tea. Not because it was gross—which it was—but because of the night I’d had. Well, the morning, I guess. The first thing I did when I woke up was shower, wash my hair and change into a pair jean shorts and a black tank top. It felt nice to be clean.

I’d slept well, but I hadn’t been able to get that demon out of my dreams. At first I thought it might be some sort of trick he played on me, but I was beginning to think that was less and less likely. I wasn’t sure why I couldn’t stop thinking about him, but I was trained to believe in fate. I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, fate had a reason for keeping Falan in my thoughts.

Falan. What an odd name for a demon.

I drained my tea with a scrunched nose, rinsed the mug out and walked to my occult room. Of all the rooms in my small house, this one was my favorite. A large bookshelf went across the entire north wall, and the shelves on the east wall held all my favorite items, carefully organized. The divination shelf was my favorite; it was always something I enjoyed playing with. Then there were the magical tools and the herbs that I gathered from the garden. The stones, metals and crystals had their own shelf, of course, this one a little smaller than the others to make space for the door.

I padded onto the fake hardwood floor and picked up one of the many markers I kept laying around. I drew my circle and three other symbols, one in the north and the others in the east and west sides.

Then it was time to gather the stones I needed. Stones were one of my other favorite forms of magic, so simple and yet so powerful, crafted by nature. Each stone possessed its own strength.

With the stones in hand, I made my way back to the circle and lay them in place. This time I didn’t need to rush. I could make sure everything was perfect. Demons liked that better anyway.

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.

“Son of Lucifer, daughter of Lilith, I summon thee to fight by my side, to protect and serve, to do my bidding and be bound to me. Come to me, Falan Farrelly!”

I didn’t know why I was doing it. I knew it was stupid but I couldn’t help it. So I took a deep breath and watched as my occult room got a little bit darker.

Crack.

Smoke filled the room, swirling its way up to the ceiling and spreading out toward all four of the walls.

He appeared just as quickly as he had in the barn, but the room was already boiling. I was thankful I’d changed this morning.

“So, this is your place?” He looked around, refusing to look at me for a couple of seconds. “It’s… witchy.”

“Is that an insult?” It sure sounded like it.

“Depends on who you ask.” He looked down and for a fraction of a second I saw him smile. “Much nicer than last night.”

“I don’t have zombies trying to eat me this time.”

“Oh, then why did you call me?” He raised an eyebrow.

I opened my mouth to say something, but then I realized I didn’t know why I’d called him. I mean, I figured it had to do with fate, but I wasn’t going to say that out loud. I had no good excuse.

A grin spread over his lips. “Did you just want to spend time with me? I have been told I have a lovely personality.”

I rolled my eyes. “No, I… um needed consult on a couple things. I figured who better than a demon?”

I could find questions to ask him, right? I swallowed dryly. “So, do you want some tea or would you rather stand in the circle all day?”

“You wanna join me in the circle?” He raised an eyebrow as his grin widened, and I realized his eyes were roaming over my body.

I felt entirely self-conscious, and I didn’t like it. There was no way I was going to give this demon control.

I pretended to mull it over for a couple seconds. “No thanks, I’m not really into dammed souls.”

It might have insulted a lot of demons, but Falan just laughed as he stepped out of the circle.

“Fair enough, but I promise you, you’re missing out.”

“I’ll take your word for it.” I turned on my heel and led the way to the kitchen. Having him behind me didn’t scare me, because there was something about him. Something had caused him to give me permission to call upon him and a demon who did that didn’t plan on killing me.

Falan

I followed her into the kitchen. Her skin was perfect. Her hair hung down her back, brown covering a blue layer on the bottom. As she reached for the kettle, the muscles in her back flexed. I was glad she had her back to me or she would have seen my eyes widen in reaction, and I didn’t want to give her any sort of leverage.

Not until I figured out why I was here.

“So.” She put the kettle on. “Why did you give me your calling card?”

“You’ve got a nice butt.” I felt stupid the second I said it, but it was too late to take it back now. I just hoped she didn’t turn around, because demons blushed- and I could feel my cheeks burning.

Sherilee Gray – Wrecked (Axle Alley Vipers)

Synopsis:

He’s driving her crazy…

Piper West is finally on her own, and it’s time to get crazy. Except that her overprotective big bro has enlisted his ex-cop best friend to keep an eye on his baby sister. With every move monitored and reported back, Piper’s life has gone from “going crazy” to “being driven crazy.” But a searing-hot kiss with her sexy and scarred watchdog is just the game-changer she needs…

Cole Black owes Piper’s brother big-time, but there’s nothing easy about his new assignment. Piper is all feisty sexiness and curves meant to tempt a man beyond reason, and Cole can’t stop himself. Now he’s caught up in a hunger like nothing he’s ever known, and he can’t get enough…

Even if Piper’s the one girl he’s not allowed to have.

Review:

This is a gratifying survivor’s guilt story with a happily ever after that is sure to put a smile on your face.

Piper is a great character.  She’s a full-sized woman that’s got a full-sized amount of caring in her heart.  She’s out to defy her role as the baby of the family and prove her competence as a mechanic.

Cole is emotionally and physically struggling from an auto accident which resulted in his police partner’s death.  His light hearted personality has vanished but not his attraction for Piper, which he’s harbored since Piper was seventeen.

I love how this love story preceded Cole’s accident.  Despite that now they’re older and supposed to be wiser and more mature, they practically act as worldly as teenagers.

It is hilarious how Cole describes his first week of living in the garage next Piper.

“The week from hell.  A week he aptly dubbed: Operation Piper fucks with Cole until he loses his goddamn mind.”

They each have have a bag of full of insecurities.  Some are real and some are the result of humorous misunderstanding.  Regardless of those issues, neither of their flawed bodies impedes their physical attraction between one another.
