How to end a book series?

The one bad thing about a great book series – all good things come to an end.  Some authors do this better than others.

A few of my favorite book series came to end recently.  It was very sad, but the authors did a fantastic job in distinctly different ways.

First, Epilogue for all the characters

Abbi Glines – Sea Breeze Series

9e9a97c319657b6baea5d27e2f9dfe15.jpg

The final book, Until the End, included an epilogue for each of the characters.  Each book in the series essentially was a romance that centered around one couple.  All the characters were connected throughout the series.  Admittedly, it’s been a while since I read the first few books.  As I read the final book, the epilogue brought back found memories of each individual book.  I felt like it was a final goodbye to each character.  And, the teasing last line was PERFECT!

Samantha Young – On Dublin Street Series

40cc279db62d3631381b56a5e29ee85d.jpg

This series didn’t actually end.  Samantha Young surprised fans of her series, like myself, and published an additional novella this past November, On King’s Way (on my TBR list).  I included this series because in Echoes of Scotland Street the author also included an extended epilogue touching on all the characters.

Additionally, Samantha Young has published a single novella to include all the characters centering around a holiday.

Second, tying up all the loose ends

Tiffany Reisz – Original Sinners Seriesabf601b9fb8115c03469a4643da5268f.jpg

This series was told in an unique way.  The story was about few characters whose relationships were complexly intertwined.  The series doesn’t follow a typical chronological order of story telling.  While I was terribly disappointed to know that the series was ending, the author did a brilliant job of clearing up all the gaps in the plot in the last novel.  I can’t wait to read the entire series again from start to finish, knowing what to expect.

Third, the spin-off (excellent for continued book sales)

In the past, I blogged about some of my favorite spin off series, check out the post at:

Favorite Spin-off Book Series

Lorraine Loveit – Playing the Game Series

bf13193a2f89571850fcf4f7b8a34cd1

This series ended very well.  This series must be read in its entirety and in order to truly understand the ending.  The author is planning a spin-off (date unknown).

Not all authors end a book series well.  I won’t mention names, because I don’t believe in book bashing.  This particular 13 book series involved a triangular relationship and I absolutely hated the way it ended.  I realize that it is simply my opinion, but the main character should have ended up with the other guy.  I found it so upsetting that I refuse to read another book by that author – EVER.

Another note on ending a book series.  Once it’s over, let it be over.  Trying to squeak out an extra book that is tangential to the series is annoying.  A few of my favorite authors have done this, but I always find the books disappointing.

As always, thank you to all the authors that fill my head with amazing characters.

Kelly Elliot – Wanted

51hKbAhtRlL.jpg

I listened to the audiobook of this book.  I really liked that there was both a male and female voice.

This is a nice southern romance involving college-aged adults.  It’s a two-for romance where the relationships between Gunner/Ellie and Jeff/Ari flourish.  There was a mix of innocence, stupidity, highly-charged sexuality, protectiveness, immaturity, and responsibility.  I liked how the characters were flawed.  In Particular, I appreciated how Gunner, a seemly infinitely patient guy, finally reached his limit with Ellie’s insecurities.

Beware, ends in a cliffhanger.

I plan to continue with next in the series.

Thanksgiving 2015 Desserts

IMG_7523Complimentary desserts to the standard pumpkin, apple, and pecan pie.

When there are a lot of desserts on a table, guests often like to enjoy a sample of many.  A slice of pie or cake tend to be large servings.  Small pick-up desserts are a nice compliment.  I like to stick to flavors of the season.  The middle plate holds nut crescent cookie, which are filled with a combination nut filling.  Nuts are always in season this time of year.  The bottom plate holds Dulce de Leche fudge.  While caramel apples are about a month past their prime – caramel is usually a welcome flavor.  Finally, the top plate holds oreo truffles – no matter what the season is, chocolate lovers want chocolate desserts.

Oreo Truffles

Grind together 1 package of Oreos and 1 8-oz pkg of cream cheese in food processor.  Roll into balls.  Place in freezer for about 30 minutes.  Dip in chocolate.

Dulche de Leche Caramel Fudge ( recipe from http://chocolatechocolateandmore.com/dulce-de-leche-caramel-fudge/ )

3 cups white chocolate (use a good chocolate – don’t use chips)

2 Tbls butter

Melt the above ingredients in microwave (don’t over cook)

Stir in 1 tsp. of vanilla and 14 oz of Duce de Leche caramel (usually found in hispanic section at grocery store)

Pour into foil lined 8×8 pan.  Chill in refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

Nut Crescent Cookies

In addition, to the above desserts, I also made:

Samantha Cole – Topping the Alpha (Trident Security #4)

41r++bCxgwL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This book goes from seriously hot to hilariously funny to suspenseful to heart-felt.

Samantha Cole writes BDSM well!  It’s hot without being over the top.  Jake’s punishments are creative and inspire a burning need (Oops! don’t want to give a way too much).  Unlike most other BDSM books, it’s not all about hard and soft limits.  Jake is equally concerned about respecting his sub.  He isn’t into public humiliation, but expects complete submissiveness behind private doors.  He’s a master of whips, but has the sense to ensure his sub finds subspace and not just sinks into a bad mental state due to his military training.

I love how the author breaks up the intensity with a little humor.  Whether it is Nick talking aloud to his dick or Ian grumbling about not getting any, the comedic timing is impeccable.  Carter delivers a line that is so funny that I accidentally spit coffee on my iPad.  (I’m impatiently waiting for Carter’s story)

Whether it’s the anticipation or reactions, coming out of the closet involves drama.  It is easier for some than others.  Cole does a thoughtful job of addressing this issue in the story.

Finally, the suspense is fresh and new and ties in to the story nicely.

Aubry Bondurant – Ask Me Something (The Something Series #2)

ask_me-1.jpg

Romance, humor, and drama – all wrapped into one book.

First, let’s talk romance.  Again, Bondurant breaks away from the normal workplace romance.  This isn’t a lust at first sight book where the weak woman falls at the feet of her boss.  Their relationship is based on years of friendship.  Sasha is a remarkably strong and successful woman and has a fabulously quick-wit tongue.  Brian is more easy going and enjoys Sasha’s challenging smart mouth.  While he may have a laid-back personality, he surprisingly demands control in the bedroom.  However, he’s not into pain play.  He’s all about pleasurable torture, making the steamy scenes very HOT.  Also, he notes that he’s not opposed to Sasha’s occasional desire of control when she states, “Maybe I want to be spontaneous and take you in my mouth without permission some morning.”

Ask Me Something

There’s tons of humor woven throughout the story – too many to quote, but here’s one:

Sasha gives Brian’s 22 year-old sister advice on what to do if the man she is attracted to does’t feel the same, “Okay, You get a big glass of wine, buy yourself a good vibrator, and you say to hell with him.  If he can’t realize that you’re a catch, McKensie, then it’s his loss.”

There’s well-written drama from all directions: family, work, and of course the relationship.

The happily-ever-after included a few delightful twists that left me smiling for days.

Kristen Ashley – Walk Through Fire

eda90254628544730a425a208218662d

Another hot biker book by KA.  Her books are absolutely addictive.  The bikers are very upfront with their emotions.  They say exactly what they mean.  It may be hard, it may be crass, but it is always real.

1b3a83d8a9590cc3420405ee111de7c2

While there usually isn’t any game playing between and a biker and his babe, Logan is upfront about the game he is playing with Millie.  The secret between them is a wall that is keeping them apart, but the sex in the interim is phenomenal.

I love how KA writes and creates her MC world.  She never fails to give her characters individual voices.  Logan defies some of the usual biker traits.  He’s attracted to Millie, despite the fact that she doesn’t dress like a traditional biker babe.  His non-confrontational relationship with his ex-wife is pretty amazing, too.  But don’t get me wrong, Logan defines a silver-foxed hot biker.  His basal attraction for Millie and constant “sex on the brain” makes the reader sweat with need.

Millie is strong, successful, and loving.  She’s willing to sacrifice everything in herself for someone she loves.

This is the first romance book that I have read that realistically represents a modern-day, combined family trying to work things out.  The creativity and effort that it takes to make such a family work well was remarkably portrayed in this book.

Finally, I adore the relationship or lack there of between Logan and Alan, Millie’s brother-in-law.  The mutual lack of respect is humorous.  Logan’s final triumph put a huge smile on my face. 🙂
