J.C. Valentine – Forbidden Valentine

unnamed-3.jpg

This isn’t a hearts and roses Valentine book.  It’s shockingly humorous.  I was a bit embarrassed when I couldn’t control my laughter and cackled loudly.  Scene after scene is more amusing than the next.

Honestly, I’ve read a hundreds of romance books, but this one wins for most astonishing.  Even after a little research on the internet, I’m still astounded.

I won’t spoil the best lines, but I’m compelled to include this one from a side character:

“If men weren’t so gosh darned sexy with all those muscles and flirty smiles and round, apply bottoms and dicks, I’d go lesbo in a heartbeat.”

Don’t fret, there’s also enough sappy phrases to give the book a traditional romantic feel.

“You’re mine now, Dani.  You’re the only woman I’ve ever allowed in my home, in this bed, and after tonight, you’re the last one I want in here. … I may not be any good for you, but you’re damn well perfect for me.”

S. Valentine – His Confession

51sBw33OenL._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This is the ultimate romance reader’s dream.  Woman in a stifling-sexless relationship dives into a sex-driven, indulgence-filled relationship.

unnamed-2

This book has the heat of erotica and plot to keep the reader intrigued.  The sex is off the charts, but the struggle with trust is real.

There’s nothing sexier than the mutual ecstasy between Gabi and Darion.  “She loved the sounds of appreciation that he made, that he enjoyed every bit of it, as did she.”

Darion’s philosophy in life is “[W]e should stick to what gives us pleasure in life.  We only get one chance, ya know, why limit ourselves?”

The one thing that bothered me about the story was all the smoking, which is why I reduced my rating from 5 stars to 4 stars.  It’s not that the smoking made me dislike the character.  There are many books where I hate the character (btw a great sign of writing) and have awarded a 5 star.  The smoking element, persistence, and timing added an “icky” factor that I simply couldn’t ignore.  Otherwise, the book is really great.  I look forward to reading the next one.

Tara Sue Me – The Master

51tvG+CqJ7L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This book is absolutely brilliant.  It literally takes a character from the evil depths of the BDSM world and steps through all the positive aspects of a BDSM relationship, which results in mentally strengthening both Dominant and submissive.

I love how the beauty and calmness of the cover directly reflects how the developing Dominant/submissive relationship between Cole and Sasha is soothing to both.  This story is about the delicacy of the BDSM relationship.

This book also contains a lot of hot erotic, traditional BDSM scenes.  Tara Sue Me writes with such finesse that the mental image of her words almost transforms into a physical caress.

THE-MASTER-TEASER-1

More importantly, the way that the author weaves the sex scenes into the context of a mutual beneficial relationship, makes this the best BDSM romance book I’ve read.

The author dispels the notion that the BDSM community is only comprised of depraved persons.  In the middle of a scene, involving numerous Doms and a sub, one of the participants receives an alarming call about their spouse being rushed to the hospital.  Everyone drops what they are doing to assist this person.  Just because these characters lead a kinky sexual lifestyle doesn’t make them lose sight of other priorities.

Finally, I also love the occasional nuggets of humor.  My favorite is when Cole sarcastically comments on Sasha’s lack of creative writing:

“Six years and the filthiest sentence you could come up with using ‘its’ is, ‘I put the vibrator in its place at the back of my nightstand’?”

Jamie McGuire – Beautiful Burn

5100tJCYE8L._SX322_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This was the final piece in the Maddox family story.  This one is as excitedly, emotionally erratic as the rest of the series.  Those Maddox men have a hot temper and strong feelings, which leads to a lot of romantic drama.  Here’s a sample:

“Goddammit, Ellie,”  Tyler said.  “You’re right.  I’m jealous as fuck.  You’re sending all these mixed signals and some guy walks in on you, sees you naked, then he’s asking about you … I have a million fucking feelings swirling around.  I don’t know what the hell I’m doing.  I’ve never felt like this before.” …

“Grow up,” [Ellie said]

This one wasn’t my favorite in the series – of course Travis is tough competition.  However, I appreciated all the little things that got clarified and tied up in this book.

I never quite understood why Tyler couldn’t let Ellie go.  He makes it clear that he’s certain that he is in love with Ellie because he fears the pain of losing her.

All in all, this is a MUST READ for fans of the series!

Christina Lauren – Wicked Sexy Liar

This book was able to pull me out of a stressed-out funk and had me rolling on the floor laughing.

I loved the characters.

I loved the story.

I’m grateful to have had the chance to read something that made me feel this good.

London’s independence is fantastic.  When Luke wants to dive south she refuses.

“I can’t give my heart away all at once.  I want to.  But I can’t.”

The romantic aspects of the story are just as sensational as the humorous ones.  Even Luke, the player, can grow up and find a way to prove his love.  The difference between the steamy scenes at the beginning of the book and near the end are both great.  There’s a taste for hot and fun as compared to sultry and loving.

Grams is the best side character ever.  She embraces the quick-witted elderly person that is inappropriate and embarrassing.  She has no qualms about comparing asparagus to a penis at the dinner table.

And hey, it’s educational, too.  Did you know that

“Vagina roughly translates to sword holder in Latin.”

This may be my favorite in the series.

Commitment to Reading Goals

6a00d8341cc30c53ef017eeaf97194970d-500wi.png

At the beginning of the year, I set my reading goals for the year.  I’m not the only one.  Many people choose to follow different kinds of reading challenges or design their own.

Now, it’s half-way through February.  It seems like a good time to check-in and see if I’m on track.

Book Count …

I read 166 books last year.  I hoped to read 150 this year.  So far, I’ve read 21, which means I’m on track.

New Authors …

My goal was 3 per month.  So far, I’ve read 10 new authors.  I love it when I find a new author that I like.

Weekly posts …

I wanted to create two more weekly posts.  I’ve continued my Teaser Tuesday post where I feature a hot image that includes a quote from a favorite book.  I started a new Friday’s Five Star Finds where I list all the books that I recently awarded 5 stars.  Perhaps I’ll come up with another weekly post soon.

New genres …

I have a couple in my reading schedule line-up.  This year, I’m more organized and created a spreadsheet to keep track of books that I have scheduled to review and books that I want to read.

How is your reading challenge going?
