I concentrate on the following: is the story told well? Is it free of clunky writing? Is it free of grammatical infelicities and typos? Did the writer research whatever needed to be researched? All of those may be true without my actually liking it. I’d give it whatever star rating it deserved based on those criteria. I might add a line like this: “Time travel stories are not my thing, but it’s well written and held my attention. If you like time travel tales, this is for you.”
