Jennifer Millikin – The Day He Went Away

REVEW

I admit it, I’m the type of girl that cries at those commercials on television where the military father unexpectedly reunites with their child and the child jumps into their father’s arms. Sometimes a girl just needs a good cry. This book pulled the tears from my eyes.

The story line is very predictable, but I don’t mean that in a bad way. It is a testament to the author’s writing that she still captures the attention of the reader. The fact that the author was able to compel me to fervently turn pages is amazingly beautiful. The characters are sincere and believable and absolutely sensational.

I don’t think I have ever said this about a book, but I think I liked everything about it.

BLURB

It took 20 years for perfectionist PR pro Kate Masters to fall for her best friend, Army scout Ethan Shepherd, but only seconds for their lives to shatter. When an ill-fated deployment cuts short Ethan’s life, Kate’s perfectly planned future vanishes. Heart in pieces, Kate abandons who she is for a reckless and dangerous existence.

Army medic Nick Hunter made a promise to Ethan, his brother-in-arms, before tragedy ripped his friend away. Upon leaving the military, Nick moves to Ethan’s hometown, his determination to uphold his promise as strong as his need to heal his own broken heart. What he finds when he arrives isn’t at all what he thought he was getting into. Kate isn’t interested in healing, making it impossible for Nick to keep his promise.

To survive grief this profound, Kate must learn how to forge a new path, and open herself up to the possibility of an unplanned happiness.

The Day He Went Away explores the devastation of loss, the beauty in losing yourself, and the transcendent power of grief.

Lisa Torquay – Igniting the Countess

REVIEW

The author’s background shines through in this beautifully articulated old English story. The tone of the dialog and narrative never deviates from the old English style. I truly felt like I had travelled back in time. The language painted the time period outstandingly well.

The romance was scintillating. The connection between the characters was intense.

However, I had issues with the plot. The crux of the story revolves around a woman being stubborn and materialistic. I did not care for the character. In fact, I felt no investment in her happiness and thus became detached from the story.

BLURB

With the shadow of scandal looming over her, the countess, Loraine Durant, had to stay away from Garth Evans.

Loraine Durant, widowed Countess of Crawford, lives her life for her toddler son, the heir of the late count. But the world seems to go out of its axis when she lays eyes on the new breath-taking footman. She fights arduously the flaming attraction she feels for him, deeming it inappropriate, failing notoriously. With the shadow of scandal looming over her, she had to stay away from him. When she discovers he is much more than a servant, it is too late and he already hates her.

Garth Evans is the bastard son of a Marquis, trying to make his unprivileged way in the world and holding back from trouble with women. Being constantly in the presence of the Countess proves to be a hellish temptation and he can hardly keep his hands off her. After they part, he thinks she is as whimsical and frivolous as any other lady of her rank. Now, he hates her for all she represents. Wrenching passion threatens to break his resolve to keep her at arm’s length, his desire for her about to burst at any moment.

REVIEW

This is a wonderfully inventive romance novel with a refreshingly new way to present a story.

Essentially, the story is told from two perspectives in alternating chapters. The story starts out where Gemma is at a fork in the road and must choose between using one of two plane tickets that will determine her future. The alternating chapters are based on which airplane ticket Gemma chose to use. It was a bit confusing at first, but after two chapters it became apparent. The titles of the chapters could have made it more clear. I don’t care for chapter titles that mark everything by time. After I got used to the constant switching at chapters, I found the format to be remarkable.

Once into the story, the dialog drives the story really well. It is a combination of happy and sad throughout. Unlike most romance novels where there are periods of happiness and sadness, this story weaves the two concepts at the same. Again, I loved the new writing approach.

BLURB

Have you ever wondered what might have been?
Gemma Dawson is at the airport, staring at two plane tickets to two different cities. Two different weddings. Two possible futures. She’s at a crossroads.
Be maid of honor at her best friend’s wedding or crash her ex’s?
Gemma’s decision, unknown to her, hinges on a delayed flight and a chance meeting. Now her life is about to go down two parallel tracks–will Gemma fly toward a life with her first love or a future with a man she’s not even met yet?
In concurrent storylines, Gemma lives out the consequences of each journey. Different stories unravel with unpredictable outcomes for Gemma and her loved ones. As the alternative realities run their course, humor and romance intertwine raising questions about fate and chance. Will these parallel universes converge? Is true love meant to be? Is everyone destined to have a soul mate? Or are one’s cards just a choice away from reshuffling?
Love Connection is a romantic comedy about one woman, life’s infinite possibilities, and the destiny that lies beyond two different choices. First Comes Love is a series of interconnected romantic novels. However, each book in the series can be read as a standalone novel.

Ruby Stallion – Naomi’s Sexy Thanksgiving (Sexy Holiday Series Book 1)

REVIEW

I thought this would be a fun read during my Thanksgiving morning work out. It did keep me entertained while exercising on the stair master. However, I was unaware that this was the first book in a holiday series. My bad. So I was a bit shocked that the story ends abruptly in a cliffhanger.

As a first book in the series, it was a decent beginning. I tend not to fall in love with books quickly.

I would definitely keep your eyes out for this series as it comes to completion. I think the series in its entirety has good potential.

Emily Ruben – I Was A Bitch

REVIEW

I love how the author puts the reader in the position of Lacey’s perspective, clueless as to what had happened in her life. I couldn’t stop turning the pages to find out what had transgressed in her life. I love how the author slowly reveals Lacey’s story.

There were a few too many issues thrown into one book. Some of the minor incidents involving ancillary characters seemed to slow the progression of the story more than just heighten the angst. Perhaps I was just antsy to have “mystery” revealed. On the other hand, some of these extra characters were written in an extremely credible manner.

Finn is an adorably lovable character. He was a bit too perfect. If he had some flaws he could have been a bit more realistic and interesting. His character was too much of a prince charming.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and I would give it 4 stars.
